The idea

A room that does one job brilliantly: hand you back a rested human.

We spent more time choosing the mattresses than the chandeliers, and it shows. Every classic room gets a pocket-sprung queen or king, blackout curtains thick enough to hide a small drama, and a shower with actual pressure. The desk is real timber, the chair doesn't squeak, and the Wi-Fi doesn't ask you to log in twice.

What you will not find: minibar prices that require a loan, art that beeps at you, or a phone in the bathroom. What you will find: a bar fridge stocked like a mate's place, and a window that opens — because Dunedin air is half the holiday. Parking: one off-street space per room, first in the gravel row by the gate.

Pets: welcome in four ground-floor rooms, NZ$30 a night, bed included.

Kids: stay free under 12 on existing bedding.

Smoking: indoors is a no; the two balcony rooms are the exception.
